Acclaimed viol consort Fretwork and Cantores Chamber Choir join forces again, this time to present a programme of music by Orlando Gibbons to mark the 400th anniversary of the composer’s untimely death in 1625. Regarded as one of the leading composers of the English Renaissance, Gibbons held posts as a gentleman and later organist at the Chapel Royal, as well as organist of Westminster Abbey in the final years of his life. His musical output includes numerous motets, verse anthems and madrigals, most famously The Silver Swan which Cantores will perform in this programme, as well as the magnificent eight-part setting of Psalm 47 O clap your hands, the deeply expressive six-part motet O Lord in thy wrath, and verse anthems for voices and viols including This is the record of John and See, see the word is incarnate.
