On Saturday 18 October at 4pm in the glorious acoustics of Holy Trinity Church, Minchinhampton, Cantores presents an eclectic programme entitled ‘The Flight of Song’ which weaves together sacred and secular pieces, both a cappella and with organ accompaniment, from the 16th Century to the present day, celebrating the joy of music and singing.
The theme of singing psalms and playing instruments in worship to God in motets by Byrd, Gibbons, Monteverdi and Palestrina features alongside music written in praise of the patron saint of music, Saint Cecilia, by Phillips and Howells. A beautiful six-part polyphonic piece by Lassus, Musica Dei donum, which speaks movingly about the power of music, sits alongside partsongs by Finzi, Bridge and Vaughan Williams, and contemporary pieces by Howard Skempton and Sarah Quartel.
